What makes for a successfully styled bedroom? For us at French Bedroom, it’s a space that balances prettiness and practicality. The room has to reflect your style, while also serving your needs.

Sound daunting? Don’t worry; here are some of our secrets to help you style the boudoir of your dreams.

1. Embrace Imperfection with Relaxed French Bed Linen

No time to iron your French bed linen? No problem. If you like the crisp ironed look of bed linen but find yourself short on time, try ironing just the pillowcases, and pair with a generous sized bedspread to cover the bed.

Et voila! A bedroom fit for last-minute guests, time-sensitive tidying, and lazy weekends. Our in-house stylist Jen shares her top tip for how to make the perfect ‘imperfect’ bed:

"One of my own approaches at home is to embrace imperfection. I absolutely love a perfectly made bed, but life can be a little too busy to make the bed each morning. I choose a pure linen bedding which has an open weave and relaxed texture that really suits the imperfect, hassle-free look."

2. Add A Colour Twist with Luxury Cushions and Pillowcases

A simple way to add a pleasing twist to your luxury bed linen is to add a pair of feature pillowcases in a different colour. Whether you favour subtle or statement colours, this easy hack adapts to myriad styles.

“I love to mix up colour in the bedroom. At home I have our Flat Waffle Bed Linen in White and Pink, so I like to dress the bed in the pink set with a pair of Flat Waffle White pillowcases sitting behind the pink, to create a gentle hint of a white frame.”

3. Layer Your Luxury Bed Linen

French Bedroom founder Georgia shares her love of layering, as both a functional and elegant take on bedroom styling. Escape the pinch of cooler temperatures and rising heating with well-styled blankets and bedspreads.

“Bedspread layering is a wonderfully warm styling approach as we go into colder months. Start with a generously sized bedspread such as the Plushious Cotton Velvet Quilted Bedspread or Peachskin Quilted Bedspread draped over the lower half of the bed, and layer up with additional blankets and bedspreads. Combine different textures, colours and patterns to create a cosy haven to snuggle under on a chilly day.”

4. Go For a Soft Touch With Luxury Cushions and Rugs

Lend a soft focus to the room by adding plush furnishings that aren’t on the bed, such as a cushion and throw draped over a French chair. A well-placed area rug elevates a room with colour, texture and pattern.

This helps to both visually balance the hard and soft elements within the space, giving an effect of cosy invitation. achieving this feel.

Georgia tells us why she tries to style a rug in every room:

“It’s easy to overlook rugs. I love them because they increase a sense of warmth and homeliness. Rugs also absorb sound, especially the high-pitched tones, making a room feel calmer and more peaceful.

Natural fibres such as coir, seagrass and jute are better for the environment as they are biodegradable and use less polymers in production, but man-made rugs will last longer.

Whatever material you choose, get the best underlay possible — at least 8mm with an anti-slip backing. The extra thickness is not only a delight to walk on but extends the life of your rug.”

5. Curate Your Lighting with Mirrors and Chandeliers

Mirrors bounce light back into the room and give an illusion of increased depth. Position your wall mirror or full-length mirror to reflect a view from a window, or to catch a glimpse of artwork.

For us, framed French style mirrors will always capture our heart. Antiqued or ‘foxed’ glass with mottled signs of age will add character and charm to your room.

In the evening, choose soft bedside lighting to set the evening mood. We recommend either side lamps or a pair of small pendants hung above your bedside tables.

A pendant light will give a fantastic ambient glow if fitted with dim, warm bulbs, and always on a dimmer switch. Our top tip: use bulbs with a colour temperature lower than 2700 kelvins (the higher the kelvin number, the cooler and bluer the light).

Georgia says about the statement effect of a French chandelier:

“I know how powerful a chandelier can be, even when it’s switched off! Chandeliers balance well with a large oversized French mirror, while also bringing the ceiling height down in the sleeping area, making the space feel more comfortable and romantically cosy too.”

6. Make The Most Of Your Space

One thing a successfully styled bedroom cannot be, is cluttered. If you are short on space, our in-house stylist Jen has you covered with this handy use of a chest of drawers.

“A chest of drawers used as a bedside table can allow you to make the most out of the space you have available. Accessorise with one or two smaller pieces of wall art above, an elegant lamp, and a couple of well-chosen curios to create the ultimate cosy - and personalised - setting.”
