Chilly days and even chillier mornings at the moment mean making your home cosy is a must! You needn't always reach for the heating thermostat - you can easily create a warm and inviting place to perch and indulge in a marshmallow topped, cinnamon-tinged hot chocolate whilst writing your Christmas cards! So layer up - here’s how...
We're taking some styling inspiration from one of our favourite companies, Toast, who do cosy so well – their Autumn Winter Lookbook features draping reindeer hides, shearling fleece slippers, layered traditional ticking bed sheets and paisley quilts. Understated and simple snugly-ness.
Sheepskin Ivory: £60
Let’s begin with what's underfoot. If your cashmere bed socks aren't keeping those feet warm, a sheepskin or reindeer hide with a good deep pile of silken hairs or wool in front of your sofa or beside your bed will do the trick. Sink your toes in and relax... A large cowhide will cover a great amount of floorspace - ideal for covering floorboards with large breezy gaps in between them.
One of the easiest ways to layer up over Winter is of course a blanket, throw or bedspread. Traditional quilted bedspreads are great for an extra layer of warmth on your French bed - open it out on top of your sheets to reveal a decorative central panel or pretty detailed edge like lace or a scalloped border.
A warm throw or blanket - whether it's textured chunky cable-knit wool, supersoft lambswool with tactile tassles, or luxurious and rather glamorous silken faux fur, popped over the side of a sofa or armchair is just what you need for battoning down the hatches and keeping warm when your girl-friends pop round for some mulled wine and pressie opening. Mix and match your styles to combine those cosy textures and create a cleverly styled eclectic look to sit alongside your beautiful French style furniture in your French bedroom or living room - for example, a traditional piece like a chesterfield sofa with a statement Union Jack or star print design, or a traditional chinoiserie bedspread with a modern buttoned upholstered bed.
English Willow Scented Candle, by Dunbar Sloane London: £22. Cat in a Cage Table Lamp: £125. Moooi Rabbit Lamp: £320.
Fragranced candles, particularly those that remind you of long woodland walks, with a warm and "woody" scent like our English Willow which has top notes of English willow and oak moss, complemented with base notes of clover & pear tree flower, will raise your spirits and fill your home with a perfectly balanced scent. Place lit candles along a mantelpiece in front of a decorative French mirror on a mantelpiece and the glistening glow is always magical- a festive feel in an instant! And a low-lit table lamp atop a side table or bedside can create the cosiest of nooks within even the biggest of spaces.
