If you go down to the woods today (AKA our lovely website!) you'll find a menagerie of charming pieces inspired by nature. Taking a leaf out of fashion’s book this Autumn/Winter, we’re bucking the trend for stags, owls and natural textures, because a home just isn't fun without them frankly!
Stag Head: From £40 for a small size.
Stags are still the motif of choice after many years of being "on-trend" in both the fashion and interiors worlds. Lending an air of grandeur to almost anything, we think that stately, smart style is epitomised by a stag head atop a French mirror as a focal point hung above a French bed, or stag print cushions paired up on a vintage leather chesterfield sofa. Think beyond the traditional French chandelier – a chandelier made from real antlers will transform a bedroom or a hallway into a handsome highland retreat. An antler wall light can be draped with pearls and favourite jewellery for a truly eclectic look. And a real reindeer rug underfoot will look stunning on stripped or painted wooden floorboards with its beautiful colouring and deep natural fur.
From the owl print which adorns over a dozen pieces in Burberry's AW12 collection on the catwalk, through to Hobbs' highstreet collection of smart, ladylike blouses and elegant dresses featuring contrastingly playful duck or fox prints, a dose of animal magic is the cheery boost your wardrobe needs for dark Autumnal days, and the same applies to your home. Choose from cushions to adorn your French chaise longues, lamps to add character to bedside tables either side of your upholstered bed, or a little side table to pop a fragranced candle and your glasses on besides a beloved French chair...
1 For the ultimate woodland experience to perk up dreary days trapped inside because of the wet weather, and for those of you without the indulgent luxury of an open fire, a wood-scented candle will do the trick. Our fragranced candle, "Bois Ancien" (which means "ancient wood") contains top notes of oak and base notes of black tea and tonka beans (which have a fragrance reminiscent of vanilla, almonds, cinnamon, and cloves) – it'll fill your room with a perfectly balanced woody and sweet scent.
2 Cosify your home with layers of tactile textures - faux animal fur throws in natural colours alongside chunky knit blankets, and recreate woodland chalet styling in your converted Victorian terrace or 1970s flat!
3 & 4 When it comes to French furniture, raw, unfinished looking wood (4) or warm mid-toned wood, varnished in a satin finish (3) – both of which will show off the natural wood grain of the furniture - will add that "natural" touch to a modern scheme. A white gloss console table can work in the same room as a traditional, varnished American oak bed - it will soften the look and add a sophisticated, cleverly Scandinavian edge to your styling.
